Enville Cricket Club

Envile Cricket Club – A Brief History & Background

The Club is situated within the Enville Estate. It has an excellent playing area for use for both recreational cricket and formal cricket coaching sessions in liaison with schools both in and out of school time.

The earliest reference to cricket being played at Enville was a letter from John Beckett, the Estate Agent to Lord Stamford, on the arrangements for a match to be played in July 1821 as part of the celebrations of the coronation of George IV.

The man mainly responsible for the development of the cricket ground was the Rt Hon George Harry Grey, Earl of Stamford and Warrington 1827-1883. The ground which measures some six and a half acres was excavated so that the right foundations could be prepared to ensure good drainage; this was followed with the application of binding soils to give excellent growing conditions.

In 1851 his Lordship was President of the MCC and from 1854-1857 both the England XI and the breakaway United England XI were visitors to play an Enville 22 as his Lordship had the power of selection of any Gentleman in England.

On the 1st August 1857 there appeared in the London Illustrated News a description of the Enville ground and a comparison was made to Lords cricket ground. Having taken every thing into account the Enville ground was given precedence over Lords and must be accounted the finest cricket ground in the world.

In 1870 the legendary Dr W G Grace played at Enville for the South of England XI against an I Zingari 18. Batting first I Zingari scored 233; the South of England struggled to find gaps in the field of 18 and were all out for 133 and 65, the Doctor recording scores of 14 and 10. It has been a long time since Enville entertained an England XI but games have been hosted for the Worcestershire CCC 2nd XI. In 1976 the club lost to Durham in the final of the National Indoor Six a Side Competition.

Whilst the Club has not provided another President of MCC K.P. Fellows was a past Chairman and Later President of the Worcestershire Cricket Association, W.F. Golding was the Secretary of the Worcester Border League and D. R. Thomas is currently Secretary of the Midland Club Cricket Conference.

Today the club run three teams on Saturdays in the Crusader Worcester County League a Sunday XI in the Worcestershire Sunday Border League and a mid week team in the Wilden Industrial Estates Cricket League

One of the benefits of the last few years has been the increased activity of the junior section, which play a large part in the Club’s weekly activities, and will play an even larger part in its future development. In the 2004 season, 89 different youngsters, both boys and girls, have attended coaching evenings. We anticipate that this figure will grow to 120 in the next three years with the arrival of new facilities.

This Junior Section is vital for future Club development and has produced great success in the past. There are currently 3 ex-Junior Section members in the First XI, and 4 in the Second XI. The Third XI often plays with up to 7 Junior Section Members.

Enville Cricket Club will continue to build on this great strength and provide all elements of the local community with the very best facilities and organisation that Club Cricket has to offer. The main recruitment catchment area is from the villages of Enville and Kinver although the club is made up of members from further a field.
